After discussing the patient's medical history
, a detailed segmental examination of the various spinal sections and the areas of radiation is performed to rule out nerve damage.
Neurological examination
X-ray examination
of theaffected sections of the spine
Detailed images of the spine are created in a so-called MRI examinationin the magnetic resonance tomograph
.
Pain medication
NSAIDsunder gastric protection, supplemented by a muscle relaxant. If there is no relief, sometimes also prednisolone 20 mg over 6 weeks.
Acupuncture
Pain relief through acupuncture stimuli
Neural therapy injections
Stimulation and detonation of a muscle region to relieve pain
Cortisone injections
of the facet joints and paravertebral muscles to reduce tension and inhibit inflammation
How often is treatment given?
As a rule, treatment is given 2-3 times a week. However, we create an individual treatment plan for each of our patients, in which the current damage and expectations (e.g. sporting activities) play a significant role.
How long does the treatment take?
Depending on the treatment, 10 minutes to 1 hour.
How long does the treatment last?
The effect often lasts for many months. The aim of the treatment is to achieve a pain-free phase for as long as possible.
The injections are somewhat unpleasant, but often provide significant pain relief afterwards. Many of our patients have completed the treatments with ease.
After weeks.
In the compensated stage, chronic back pain can only occur occasionally and allow regular everyday strain as well as adapted sport or even make it necessary as a preventative measure.
As a patient, you must learn to understand your clinical picture in order to avoid inappropriate strain and incorrect sporting exercises during training.
Only the general injection risks or acupuncture risks.
Acupuncture, cortisone injections and physiotherapy are covered by all health insurance companies.
Specific injection therapies are only covered privately.
Surgical treatment is only necessary in very few cases, but is sometimes essential if there is nerve damage, e.g. loss of sensation or muscle paralysis, in order to avoid permanent damage. Sometimes also if the pain cannot be controlled despite all treatment measures.
Can a herniated disc heal itself without major treatment?
There are isolated documented cases of regression.
In the event of an operation, you should take it easy for approx. 3 months, as special follow-up treatment, often involving inpatient rehabilitation and later reintegration, should be completed after the operation.
Driving is rarely at risk. Sporting activities that are associated with spinal column sprains should certainly be viewed critically. This includes all jumping disciplines such as trampolining and high jumping, but also ball sports such as handball and basketball.
However, the ability to bear weight also depends on the surgical procedure:
In surgical therapy, the disc tissue that is pressing on the nerve is removed either microsurgically or by open surgery.
As a rule, you will be able to move again without restriction after 3-6 months.
A herniated disc can recur.
